Prutz – authentic Tyrolean village in Kaunertal

Located at the entrance to the Kaunertal valley, Prutz is a charming Tyrolean village where history meets adventure at altitude. Whether you are looking for a quiet retreat or a base for alpine sports, Prutz offers a down-to-earth, authentic Austrian experience.

History and description

Prutz has long served as an important crossroads. It lies on the ancient Via Claudia Augusta, a Roman road that once connected Italy with Germany. In the Carolingian period, it was an important post office and rest stop.

The architectural heart of the village is its late Gothic parish church, which was later renovated in 17th-century Baroque style. While a fire in 1903 destroyed much of the original village, the center was rebuilt in traditional West Tyrolean style – characterized by houses built close together to withstand the mountain climate.

Today, Prutz is known for its blend of tradition and modern utility; it is home to one of Austria's largest hydroelectric power plants and one of the country's largest toboggan production facilities.

Nature and activities

Nature is the main event here. Prutz is located where the Inn River meets the Faggenbach, surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Kaunergrat Nature Park.

Sauerbrunn Spring

This natural mineral spring, discovered in 1212, provides free, naturally carbonated water rich in iron and magnesium.

Outdoor sports all year round

In summer, the area is a hub for mountain biking and hiking, with trails stretching up to 3,000 meters. In winter, the central location offers quick access to the Ski Dimension Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis and the Kaunertal Glacier.

Adventure Pool

The village has a popular outdoor swimming complex with slides and sports courts, perfect for families.
